In Mark 2:23–3:8, Jesus directly confronts the legalism of the Pharisees and reveals His true authority over the Law. When the disciples pick grain on the Sabbath, the Pharisees accuse them of breaking the law—but Jesus exposes their misunderstanding of Scripture and their man-made traditions. Jesus declares, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath,” and then makes an even greater claim: “The Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” Christ is not subject to the Sabbath—He is the Lord of it. The conflict intensifies when Jesus heals a man with a withered hand on the Sabbath. While the Pharisees seek to accuse and destroy, Jesus demonstrates that the Sabbath is a day for doing good, not withholding mercy. This passage reminds us that true obedience is not about man-made rules or self-righteous works, but about knowing Christ, loving Him, and honoring Him as Lord. The Sabbath points us to rest in Him—and to live in joyful obedience to the One who gave the Law.
